The practice does not offer paid holidays as a separate benefit, because the four-day week already gives you 52 paid days off a year. Holidays are still always off. Here is how it works.

The rule

  • On a holiday the office is closed and no client sessions are scheduled. Nobody works a holiday.
  • If a holiday falls on one of your four working days, the holiday becomes your day off for that week, and your usual day off (Friday, by default) becomes a working day.
  • If a holiday falls on a day you are already off, nothing changes. There is no substitute day.
  • A holiday can never be used as a bank day. See Time off and the four-day week.
Example. December 25 falls on a Wednesday. Your normal days are Monday through Thursday. That week you are off Wednesday and you work Friday.

Which days

The practice’s holiday closures are the days the office is closed to clients. The list is set by Helen and published each December for the following year in PracticeOS and the SOP library. Until the first list is published, the closures are the federal holidays observed by most Utah businesses: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Pioneer Day (July 24), Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.

Pay

For salaried staff, a holiday week is a normal paid week; only the day moves. Hourly staff (interns) are paid for hours worked and are not scheduled on holidays.

Religious and personal observances

If you observe a day that is not on the practice’s list, arrange it as a schedule change or a banked day with the practice manager. We accommodate observances wherever coverage allows, and we treat the request the same as any other. See Accommodations if you need a standing arrangement.

Client sessions around holidays

Clients often need extra support around holidays. If you are seeing clients the day before or after a closure, make sure they know how to reach help while the office is closed. See Emergency and after-hours coverage.
